Analysis of Dayton Miller's Ether-Drift Experiments
by James DeMeo, Ph.D.

Miller's Work with Interferometry

The basic principles of light-beam interferometery for detection of
ether-drift are described in most textbooks, albeit with typical factual
errors (ie, the slight positive result of the Michelson-Morley experiment is
nearly always misrepresented as a "null" result) and so will not be repeated
here. However, there were novel methods introduced by Miller into the
discussion of ether-drift, along with construction features and principles
of operation which are not widely known -- these will be detailed.

Miller began his work on the question of ether-drift and light-beam
interferometery with Edward Morley, from 1902 to 1906, using an apparatus
three times as sensitive as the original interferometer used by
Michelson-Morley in 1887. In later years, from 1921 through 1926, Miller
undertook ether-drift research independently using even more sensitive
instruments with light paths of up to 210 feet in length. He became
convinced of an ether Earth-entrainment effect, which necessitated using the
apparatus at higher altitudes (to get above the anticipated
entrainment-effect of sea-level environments), and he additionally undertook
the experiments in structures where the walls at the level of the light-path
were composed of window glass or canvas. Only glass, or glass and corrugated
paper covers were used along the light-paths, with all metal shielding
removed.

The interferometer apparatus itself was large, consisting of iron platform
arms formed into a cross, upon which mirrors were mounted to repeatedly
reflected light beams back and forth in a horizontal plane, starting from
the same light-source, and recombined to form interference fringes whose
movement relative to a pointer was read through a magnifying lens. The large
apparatus was slowly rotated, being affixed to a frictionless base floating
inside a circular tank of liquid mercury. Fringe-shift movements (in tenths
of a fringe, plus or minus in direction) were observed by one person who
walked around with the apparatus while it turned, speaking out the readings
at the ring of an automatically triggered bell which sounded at 24-deg.
intervals (dividing the circle into 15 parts). An assistant then noted the
readings on paper. The readings, from consecutive turns of the apparatus
were then organized into "sets", which were made at different times of day
and at different seasons of year. Data sets were then averaged according to
a sidereal time clock, and correlated with external celestial coordinates.
In his 1933 paper, Miller summarized his work, and the very large quantity
of data gathered to support his conclusions. A total of over 200,000
individual readings were made in over 12,500 individual turns of the
interferometer, at many different months of the year, starting in 1902 with
Edward Morley at Case University in Cleveland, and ending in 1927 with his
Mt. Wilson experiments. These do not include many rigorous control
experiments undertaken at Case University from 1922 to 1924. More than half
of Miller's readings were made at Mt. Wilson using the most sophisticated
and controlled procedures, with the most telling set of experiments in 1925
and 1926. By contrast, we can mention here, the original Michelson-Morley
experiment of 1887 involved data-gathering on only six hours over four days
(July 8, 9, 11 and 12 of 1887), with a grand total of 36 turns of their
interferometer. Miller claimed his experiments yielded systematic periodic
effects which pointed to a similar identifiable axis of cosmic ether-drift,
though of a greater or lesser magnitude, depending upon the season, time of
day, density of materials shielding or surrounding the apparatus, and the
altitude at which the experiment was undertaken. He argued that basement
locations, or interferometers shielded with opaque metal housings, yielded
the most tiny and insignificant effects, while those undertaken at higher
altitudes or in less dense structures yielded more readily observable
effects. Miller argued the Michelson-Morley experiment, undertaken in the
basement of a stone building, also produced a slight positive result which
was in agreement with his own results.

Members-

The existence of ether paves the way for a soft particle understanding,
which paves the way for Mr. Cater's Hollow Earth moedl, as I have outlined
in A Comprehensicve, Hollow Earth Model:

Gerry,

I really enjoyed reading your piece on the HET beginning with the Kubla Khan
poem.

I really didn't have much of an idea of Hyperborea and Ultima Thule, so your
piece helped fill in the gaps.

The length was just right.

Gerry,

About your writing below on Armageddon- Are you sure that we can trust the
authenticity of Byrd's diary?

I've heard that there is something fishy about it, and about Harley Byrd,
who touts it around.

Admiral Byrd and "The Land Beyond the Poles".

Referring back briefly to this issue of polar openings, before I leave it
for the present. It's always possible that there might conceivably be a
secret agenda of some sort (probably of the "Government Cover-up Conspiracy"
kind) to keep their existence a carefully-guarded secret from the general
population, whilst the government-agencies concerned acquire and exploit the
advanced technology of any such advanced race as may dwell inside the Earth,
for their own nefarious "Defense" purposes.

If this were to turn out be the case, it might perhaps explain the curious
"will'o' the whisp" virtually-mythical log-diaries of Rear-Admiral Richard
Byrd, in which he is reported to have claimed to have actually visited the
land beyond the Poles (i.e; entered a polar hole into a green, warm land
beyond) and been escorted in by "strange, disc-shaped type of aircraft"
bearing oddly-familiar "swastika" markings, to a landing-place, from whence
he and his radio-man were escorted, via a "moving-platform without wheels"
by several tall, blond men into a highly-futuristic and wonderful "Buck
Rogers"-type city. There, as Byrd is alleged to have written, he met the
seemingly ageless patriarchal Master of this inner world (apparently called
"Arianni".*)

The Master's bodyguard, whom Byrd is said to have claimed in his account,
spoke English with a Nordic or German accent, then guided him and his
colleague, Howie, into a guest apartment, where they were left alone for a
short while. Then two of their "wondrous-looking hosts" allegedly came and
escorted Byrd, on his own, down below ground in some kind of
silently-operating open elevator - informing him that he was being taken to
have an audience with the Master. The lift stopped and Byrd was now ushered
into a great, palatial room, the luxuriant and wondrous beauty of which
"defied his powers of description".

*(Note: The crafts' insignia, the blond super-beings, and the very name of
their inner world "Arianni," leaves the reader in little doubt as to the
"Pure Germano-Nordic Aryan" nature of this race! GF.)
