Gary,
This book is about Lt. Greely, later General.
He was one of the guys that took off with Admiral Mac Millan across the ice and saw the mirage of mountains in the middle of the Arctic near the North pole. Of course, if they went a little further, they might have actually seen more. How would we know?
What we do know is that one of the Eskimos copped an attitude after seeing the mirage of the mountains and land mass, and who knows what the Eskimo said he was going to do? (Tell what they really saw, how far they really went?)
What Greely did was take him aside on the way back, out of sight, and put a bullet through his head. Sweet guy, huh? Now we know how to make General.
Greely claimed that the Eskimo attacked him or something like that, but the Danish administrators of Greenland were very upset about it all and international complaints were made.
But the book must be worth reading. I'm going to take a look.
Later!
Dean

Nice, most interesting. Greely doesn't sound like a nice person. Let us know what you find out. Gary
