The Yugas and Vedic Chronology

Friends,<This Radio interview was sent to me today, coincidentally, on the heels of my previous post. Thus I felt it appropriate to share. The interview is done with a Western scholar, author, scientist and mathemetician, Dr. Richard L. Thompson, now deceased. He authored several books such as Vedic Cosmology-Mysteries of the Sacred Universe, Forbidden History, Vedic Cosmography and Astronomy and Alien Identities. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YSr_R1h6tVQ&feature=player_embedded

Good info Saul, thanks... One thing has me puzzled though... the difference between the circle=360 degrees<and> 365 1/4 days of the current year... I know Dr. Richard L. Thompson explained it in this video, but, I have read from other sources that there was/were formally 360 days in our Earth year, (hence<>360 degrees in the circle) but, that after the last pole shift/great flood event, after things settled down, there were 365 1/4 days in our year... related to our 23 1/2 degree current tilt of the Earth, which was before the changes was apparently 0<>zero degrees tilt...

All comments welcome. Gary

Gary,

I haven't listened to the whole interview yet, but I can still make a comment or two about your question.

First of all, I know that in the Vedic astrological iterature, sometimes there is confusion as to whether a solar month or a lunar month is being referred to. The lunar month is much closer to 30 days and a 360 day year.

1 lunar month = 29.53059 days

And then it's also true that there has been some astronomical change since Vedic times to now. For example, the astrological treatise Brihat Jataka quotes an older astronomical text, which has since been lost, as referring to elongations between Venus and the Sun that are no longer possible to achieve. So the orbit of Venus has experiebnced some slight changes.

And the zodiacal asterism Abhijit, formerly in Aries, has since slid sideways, so to speak, and is no longer in the zodiac. Before, there were 28 asterisms in the zodiac, and now there are 27.

So perhaps the Sun used to travel from, for example, zero degrees of Aries, around the zodiac and back to zero degrees of Aries, in 360 days, but that now the movements have slightly slowed such that it takes the Sun an extra 5 days of apparent motion, i.e., 365 days.

Good night.

Dean
