The same evidence could be interpreted in a different way. We would
attribute the swirling vortex to air being sucked into the opening.

A few more thoughts on this subject. On 3/20 I posted how earth has
a similar phenomena called the Antarctic vortex, the below web page
writes the "Antarctic polar vortex is a natural, continent-wide 'tornado'
of 200 kph, super-cold winds surrounding the ozone 'hole' from the
stratosphere to the surface. That web page describes how this vortex
has changed in recent years, it has been shrinking and accelerating,
and proposes this has caused various weather changes in some parts
of the world. Many scientist feel this change may relate to global
warming.

So what is causing this shrinking and accelerating? There's a few
theories around but in my opinion the weakening of the earth's
magnetic field, caused by the growing size of the South Atlantic
Anomaly (SAA) plays a big role. The current pole location is the point
where a large number of the earth's magnetic field lines converge.
Lines which cosmic energies from the solar wind wrap around and
form the magnetosphere. This may relate to the cause of the Antarctic
Vortex and associated winds to begin with, so when changes occur in
the magnetic field lines, and they become redistributed and concentrated
in areas other than the existing poles, there's a redistribution of that
energy which forms the vortex. So not only does the magnetic field
get weakened but the vortex effect at the poles shrinks also. As the
SAA continues to grow and become more coherent the vortex will
likely move to that location altogether.
Concerning how the SAA has changed the shape of the magnetosphere,
the below web page writes in part:
"Unfortunately, at a certain location over the South Atlantic Ocean, off the
coast of Brazil, the shielding effect of the magnetosphere is not quite
spherical but shows a "pothole", a dip, which scientists explain as a result
of the eccentric displacement of the center of the magnetic field from the
geographical center of the Earth (by 280 miles) as well as the displacement
between the magnetic and geographic poles of Earth."

Changes in the polar vortex is known as Arctic oscillation and solar wind
variation is known to cause fluctuations in the Arctic oscillation, so there
is a relationship to the earth's magnetosphere. However so far I haven't
found any research which points to a direct relationship to the growing
South Atlantic Anomaly and the shrinking Antarctic polar vortex,
seem obvious but nobody's talking.
