I think the answer is rather simple. Everything that all of the
explorers experienced is true- Byrd, Perry, Nansen. BUT they were
living at a different time. The political situation on the surface is
totally different now. It is not in the best interest of those that
reside inside to have the opening a known. It used to be difficult to
get to the Arctic. Now anyone with enough money can do it. We have
the technology. It's everyday, commonplace. Anyone could find their
way inside and it is simply not desired by those who reside there.
I stated long ago "that all who seek with an open heart are welcome".
Many who would seek do not have open hearts.
There is more real estate inside than on the outside. Look at what
the white race has done to the 'natural' peoples and the land
surfaces. WE ARE NOT WELCOME AT THIS TIME. At least most are not
welcome.

I don't necessarily think that finding or not finding a hole around
the north pole has to be this complicated and mystical. As shown by
most things in the past, once you fully understand what's going on you
often can take away much of the cloud of confusion. (i.e. Native tribes
eventually will stop worshiping airplanes and light bulbs once the fully
realize that these are predictable and not voodoo magic.)
I'm not disregarding that an inner surface race could produce a hologram
to make a surface hole appear to vanish but would it really be worth
their time & energy to do so? Hard to say. We also would have to make the
assumption that they might be advanced enough to be able to pull this
off. Hard to say. All I'm saying is that MOST things just aren't this
complicated. There will always be exceptions....
Wait for an active aurora borealis. According to the thoughts of many,
the hole would "definitely" be accessible then.
It's very possible that if there is a donut shaped hole that the smallest
opening could even be anywhere from 10 to 100 miles wide. Given a hole size
of 10 miles, it might be EXTREMELY difficult to locate this hole even if
you had been there many other times. You could sail through the edges of
the donut, as mentioned by others earlier, and not even realize it. You
would have to steer towards the near center to go in rather than around.
With the advent of GPS, though, repeatability would be orders of magnitude
easier.

Jason,
The opening isn't exactly at the pole. Everyone feels that it is offset
towards the Canada/Alaska side. That picture that we were discussing
gives an idea because the side on which the opening is suspected of
being is cut off.
Cater seems to think a hole is on the Canada/Alaska side.
He even points out a picture in Life magazine to check out.
(Life - Nov 10th,1967) I've seen this picture myself. It
appears there is slight flat spot there but it wasn't as
pronounced as I would has hoped for a stronger case. This
doesn't discount the photo, however.
A photo on this page suggests the hole is on the russian side:

I would agree that they prefer to keep the riff raff out of the
neighborhood.
