That TV series you were thinking of, with Linda Hamilton and the lion-looking guy, was called "Beauty and The Beast" - my wife and I were great followers of it Down Under here in Oz, years back.
Excellent show, and also an amazing insight into what lies so astonishingly deep under NY city! We always wondered why movies featuring NY street scenes at night always showed STEAM rising up in clouds out of the drains? Where does it all come from? It can't be from the Subway can it? Surely
it's all electric. So where? Do they have a whole lot of underground Chinese laundries or something down there?
