I was also wondering what to make of the magnetic anomaly map. I live in one of the 400 level (bright purple) areas. I noticed that Shaver also lived in a 400 level area when he lived in Barto, PA. Berwick is a lower number, as is Detroit.

they can determine not only the mineral composition of ore bodies but
even the relative size and shape of underground structures, and perhaps
even its history. I'm not sure these colors mean much to people living
in these areas since this is in nanoteslas.

Bio-magnet power is measured in terms of Gauss, the line of force per
unit area of the pole. The earth's surface is approximately 0.5 Gauss.

There are many challenges interpreting magnetic data for mineral
exploration. Multiple targets mix together like multiple heat sources.
Unlike light, there is no magnetic telescope to focus fields. We measure
the combination of multiple sources at the surface. We also do not know
the geometry, depth or magnetization direction (remanence) of the
targets. We can produce multiple models the explain the data - the

Magnetometers assist mineral explorers both directly, i.e. gold
mineralization associated with magnetite, diamonds in kimberlite pipes;
and more commonly by indirect means such as mapping geological
structures conducive to mineralization, i.e. shear zones and alteration
haloes around granites.
Aeromagnetic data was once presented as contour plots, but now is more
commonly expressed as colored and shaded computer generated
pseudo-topography images. The apparent hills, ridges and valleys are
referred to as aeromagnetic anomalies. A geophysicist can use
mathematical modeling to infer the shape, depth and properties of the
rock bodies responsible for the anomalies.
Aeromagnetic surveys are widely used to aid in the production of
geological maps and are also commonly used during mineral exploration.
Some mineral deposits are associated with an increase in the abundance
of magnetic minerals, and occasionally the sought after commodity may
itself be magnetic, e.g. iron ore deposits, but often the elucidation of
the subsurface structure of the upper crust is the most valuable
contribution of the aeromagnetic data.
