Dear Members:
I hope that there is no one on this group who lives in Peru, or has relatives or friends there who experienced this disaster earlier today. If so, my heart goes out to you and yours.
In thought & prayer,
Love, Leslee
Large 7.9 Earthquake and Major X-Class Flare Alert...06/23/01
by Mitch Battros (ECTV)
Most of you know my research since 1998, shows a connection between solar activity and Earth weather. Earlier this month NASA made a public statement confirming my hypothesis.
Nasa's statement:
" The Earth is affected by both solar flares and sunspots. Sunspots may have a long-term connection with the Earth's
climate. Scientists are currently debating whether ice ages on Earth are related to the Sun having fewer sunspots
than usual. " June 6th 2001
Could it be the devastating 7.9 earthquake which hit Peru earlier today causing several casualties and structural damage, be connected to Thursdays full solar eclipse as well as a sunspot count of 264 (114 points higher than NASA's prediction)? Some would say yes. Others in the science community who agree solar activity has a definite affect on Earth, are not convinced it has same affect on earthquakes. I would tend to lean on the side of "it probably does". I believe it happens this way. When the super charged particles hit our atmosphere, it charges the Earth's magnetic field; in turn affecting the Earth's core and shifting magma; which in turn shifts tectonic plates causing Earth movement.
Now remember, this is simply my hypothesis and subjective conjecture based on my research. In other words 'my guess'. If this was to hold true, then there is no surprise of today's event and more than likely quakes and server weather are yet to come. Having said this take careful notice to what happened on August 8th 1999. The BBC reports on a X-Class solar flare alert as warned by NASA. On August 11 1999 a full solar eclipse occurred just as was the full solar eclipse last Thursdays June 21st.
But it doesn't stop there. Just 6 days later on August 17th 1999, a 7.8 earthquake hits Turkey killing 35,000 people.
Just a coincidence? I think not...
August 8th 1999 X-Class Flare Alert
August 11th 1999 Full Solar Eclipse
August 17th 1999 7.8 Earthquake Hits Turkey, 35,000 Believed Dead
Watch the west coast for continued quakes as the 'ring of fire' is likely to continue rumbling.

Major X-Class Solar Flare Alert (6/23/01)
Astoalert News
A new active sunspot group nearing the central meridian of the Sun has experienced significant and rapid growth over the last 24 hours. The growth of opposite polarity magnetic sunspot bipoles (umbrae having opposite polarities) within close proximity to each other has resulted in tight magnetic field gradients in the region. Such rapid growth also often promotes the twisting or shearing of magnetic fields and these forces can result in spectacular releases of magnetic energy that we call solar flares.
The active region in question was numbered by NOAA recently as sunspot Region number 9511. If a geographical grid of latitude and longitude lines were overlaid on the Sun with the rotational equator representing the zero latitude line (just as we do on the Earth), this region would currently be located near north latitude 10 degrees and 25 degrees east of the central
meridian that forms an imaginary line splitting the rotational poles down the center of the Sun as viewed from the Earth. In abbreviated form, it is therefore located at N10E25 on the Sun or slightly north and east of the rotational equator and the central meridian line.
At 04:08 UTC on 23 June (8 minutes after midnight, EDT), Region 9511 produced a brief but major class X1.26 solar flare. It lasted only about 5 minutes, but in x-rays became almost 100 times brighter than the rest of the sun combined.
Solar x-rays are categorized using letters on a logarithmic scale. The weakest solar x-ray category is the A class. This is followed (in order of increasing energy) by classes: B, C, M and finally X. Each successive x-ray class is a power of 10 stronger than the preceding class. So X-class x-rays are 10 times more intense than M-class x-rays and 100 times stronger
than C-class x-rays. Each class is subdivided into 10 logarithmically spaced parts beginning at 1.00 and ending at 9.99... So a class M1.00 solar flare is just slightly more energetic than a class C9.99 solar flare. Major solar x-ray flares are those which attain a peak x-ray amplitude of at least M5.00. A class M4.99 solar flare is therefore (technically) considered to be a minor
solar flare.
Fortunately, this major flare was much less significant than what we know the Sun is capable of producing. It is still too early to determine whether this event was associated with an Earthward directed coronal mass ejection (CME). But available evidence suggests that if a CME was directed Earthward, it will most likely be fairly insignificant.
If active sunspot Region 9511 continues to grow rapidly, additional X-class solar flares of potentially larger magnitude may be observed. Region 9511 produced a second smaller major class M5 x-ray solar flare a few hours earlier near 00:16 UTC on 23 June. However, such rapid energetic flare production may only be the result of an initial chaotic growth spurt that could stabilize rapidly in the coming days or even result in the early decay of the region. Nevertheless, it is a sunspot group worth watching.
Region 9511 is presently too small to be observed with the protected naked eye. It should, however, be visible in properly filtered small telescopes. Refer to the web site:
This site identifies each of the sunspot regions using a white-light image from the SOHO (Solar and Heliospheric Observatory) spacecraft. This is the type of view most would see from small telescopes.
Current real-time images of the Sun in the flare-detecting light of hydrogen-alpha can be found at: http://www.spacew.com/sunnow for those who are interested in watching these solar flares as they happen. Daily movies of
this activity are also generated and are available at the site noted above.
