Craters Hidden Beneath the Greenland Ice Sheet

Folks , there is a strong likelihood that hidden craters beneath the mile thick ice sheet of Greenland , could reveal a lot about gaining access to inner Earth .

In 2018, scientists reported the discovery of the first-ever meteor impact crater under the Greenland Ice Sheet. It didn't take long for them to find another. Reporting Feb. 11, 2019, in the journal Geophysical Research Letters, researchers led by NASA Goddard glaciologist Joseph MacGregor described a second possible impact crater just 113 miles (183 kilometers) from the first.

The research team used a combination of satellite imagery of the ice and radar measurements of the underlying bedrock to discover the likely crater. The only other explanation for the circular depression could be a volcanic caldera, MacGregor told Live Science, but there is no sign of the magnetic anomalies that are seen in volcanic rocks. A large meteor collision is a more likely explanation, he said.

Deep depression

The newly discovered crater is a depression 22 miles (36 km) in diameter, making it the 22nd-largest impact crater ever discovered on Earth. Its previously discovered neighbor, the Hiawatha crater, is slightly smaller at 19 miles (31 km) across. The Hiawatha crater is under about a half-mile (930 meters) of ice, while the new crater is buried far deeper: 1.2 miles (2 km) down.

Dating a crater

(Image credit: Cindy Starr, NASA Scientific Visualization Studio)
Scientists aren't sure how old the crater is. The oldest layer of ice above it that has been dated is 79,000 years old, but ice flows, so there is no guarantee that the 79,000-year-old ice was the original ice covering the depression. An analysis of the ratio between the crater's depth and width suggests that it has been eroding for between 100,000 and 100 million years.

Hello, Hiawatha

(Image credit: Natural History Museum of Denmark)
This image shows the location of the original Hiawatha crater, which sits under the edge of the Greenland Ice Sheet. It would have been formed by a meteor 0.6 miles (1 km) wide, according to a study published in November 2018 in the journal Science Advances. Scientists estimate that the Hiawatha crater is younger than the new crater, at between 12,000 and 3 million years old.

Remote location

Both craters were found in a remote region of northwest Greenland. The arrow points to the Hiawatha crater. The new crater is farther inland, buried deeper under ice and in a far more challenging area for study.

A virtual look at the Hiawatha crater, peeling away the layers of ice on top of it. Scientists map the bedrock below the ice using radar waves beamed from an aircraft. The waves travel through the ice and bounce back to receivers on the plane. From the changes in the waves, researchers can reconstruct the shape of the underlying topography.

A look at the topography of the new impact crater. More craters may dot the subsurface of the Greenland Ice Sheet, MacGregor said, but the two already found are probably the largest and most obvious.

Crater questions

It was surprising to find two craters so close together, MacGregor said. Exploring the second crater would be a scientific and technical challenge, he said, given its remote location and the depth of the ice.

Trump inquires about US buying Greenland, but it's not for sale

That is not a sentence from an Onion article, although you could be forgiven if you made that mistake. This President, the most unorthodox resident of the White House in modern history, is actually, apparently, interested in buying Greenland -- the world's largest island currently owned by Denmark. This raises all sort of questions -- like, literally, dozens -- but I've boiled it down to five key ones, which I will now attempt to answer.

  1. Why?
It makes sense to get the big one out of the way first, right? Why would the US President want to purchase an island that is 80% covered by an ice sheet and where less than 60,000 people actually live? Trump himself hasn't said -- yet -- but there are a few obvious reasons. The first is because Greenland is widely believed to be hugely rich in natural resources -- including iron ore, lead, zinc, diamonds, gold, rare earth elements, uranium and oil. And much of it is currently untapped, due to the fact that, well, 80% of the country is covered by an ice sheet. But due to global warming, that ice sheet is melting rapidly -- this summer NASA scientists observed two of the largest melts in the history of Greenland -- and that erosion of the ice sheet is expected to make the mining of Greenland's natural resources more doable.

The second is for geopolitical reasons. The United States already has a foothold in the country -- Thule Air Base -- and, as The Wall Street Journal, which broke the Greenland purchase story, notes:

"Located 750 miles north of the Arctic Circle, it includes a radar station that is part of a U.S. ballistic missile early-warning system. Buying Greenland would be a major bullet point on his presidential resume.
2. Is Greenland for sale?
Seems like no!"#Greenland is rich in valuable resources such as minerals, the purest water and ice, fish stocks, seafood, renewable energy and is a new frontier for adventure tourism," tweeted the country's government on Friday morning. "We're open for business, not for sale."

Denmark owns Greenland, but the country has its own autonomous government. The country was granted home rule by the Danes in 1979 and in 2008 voted via referendum for even more autonomy from Denmark.
3. Is this crazy?
Nope -- despite what Twitter might make you think. The United States has actually pursued the purchase of Greenland before, according to a Danish historian named Tage Kaarsted. In 1946, US Secretary of State James Byrnes -- serving under President Harry Truman -- broached the idea with the Danish foreign minister at a United Nations meeting in New York. Nothing ever came of it. Almost 100 years before that, Secretary of State William Seward -- fresh off the US's purchase of Alaska -- apparently looked into buying Greenland from the Danes.

  1. Does the US buy a lot of other countries?
Um, no. One of the last times the United States bought land from a foreign country was in 1867, when Seward orchestrated the purchase of Alaska from the Russians for $7.2 million. It was heavily criticized at the time -- and has gone down as "Seward's Folly" in the history books. The US also purchased the Philippine islands from Spain in 1898 for $20 million and the Virgin Islands from Denmark in 1917 for $25 million.

The most famous land acquisition by the United States came earlier -- 1803 to be exact -- when we agreed to the Louisiana Purchase with France. The US paid $15 million at the time for land that makes up almost one-quarter of America's current territory.

  1. How does that saying go about Greenland and Iceland?
It goes like this: Greenland is actually icy and Iceland is actually green. And it's generally true! Blame the Vikings for the names!

The Point: Donald Trump has a lot of wild ideas as president. Buying Greenland may be one of the most unorthodox. But it's also not one of his worst.

Sidhartha,

I think that pyramids mark the spot of underground tunnels and cavern systems, but craters sem to be created by proton beams which cause lateral explosions, but not much harm to the central point of contact of the proton beam with the ground. As per Cater:

Dean , Greenland has an area of 2.2 million square kilometers , nearly all of which is buried under a thick ice sheet. We can only imagine how many cavern networks and openings to underground worlds might be hidden there under the ice sheet ??

Aaah, I thought you meant something like "If we could only get to the crater, we could find an opening there". I was scratching my head.

Elves have been reorted very much in nearby Iceland, so we can just imagine what kind of cavern world inhabitants could live below Greenland.

Dean

There was a Viking tribe who had settled down in Greenland and then is known to have simply "vanished" without a trace from Greenland...could they have found a way to inner Earth ??

Sidhrtha,

Traces of the Viking encampments where they wintered have been found up across Ellesmere and along the Arctic coast a bit.

When the Europeans returned to the colony after 200 years, an absence mostly due to the black plague, they found the colony abandoned and the Eskimos told them that the colonists had gone North to where there is constant daylight.

I think they made a run for it.
