Have anybody of you heard about a cold river, below the freezing
point, coming our from under the ice at the the South-Pole?
Some Norwegian scientists have drilled 1000 meter through the
ice to confirm this. I just heard it on the radio. So fare I could not
find any information on the net.
Hi Frode, I watched a programme about this, if we're talking about the same
thing. Decades ago a scientist deduced a large body of water was beneath
Antarctica Either due to lack of funds, support or success he gave up the
search, but it's been detected by sonar or radar, a huge lake the size of
Wales, called I think Vostock, because it's directly below the first Russian
base station. It's been trapped since the ice-sheet covered the region and
so must contain organisms and life forms since before the last ice-age.
There is no light penetrating this world, but life can exist without light,
in caves. It could provide answers to how life is created both here and on
other planets, but...the drill they are using is lubricated with oil and
will immediately contaminate this untouched volume of water so scientists,
wouldn't know if the organisms they find in samples were introduced by them
or already there, so until they invent an alternative method of penetrating
the ice, they can't test the water. I'm not much of a scientist, but did
this help? Hazel

It is not the same thing. This river is going into the ocean and is supposedly the main contributor to cold water in our oceans. I know about the Vostock lake. It has been a topic on this list just some months ago.
They also just recently managed to drill down through 1000 meter ice to confirm the existence of this river. They used hot water for drilling. They are convinced that it is made up of melting water from the ice itself, melting due to pressure. From what I understand it is a huge river.
