The Bancroft Arnesen Expedition Map
Dean: Heres that site again on the ladies who went to the S. Pole. I recorded what I believe was their first news release that I told you about that was live on CNN from New York. After that all news stations aired about their return. I'll have to watch the film again to give you more details, but they hardly mentioned anything about their being picked up. It said the time frame for the rest of the trip to McMurdo wouldn't allow them to complete the rest of the journey. Their email address is listed here so someone should ask them about being picked up early and why? The portion that I recorded on the evening news showed some of the video of the trip and I think they have a video of the trip that you can order. From: Ralph

Hi,
Dean: Heres that site again on the ladies who went to the S. Pole.

It said the time frame for the rest of the trip to McMurdo wouldn't
allow them to complete the rest of the journey. Their email address
is listed here so someone should ask them about being picked up early
and why?
I haven't tried emailing them but one of the possible reasons is very
obvious and mentioned in the post right after this on this list:
Re: [allplanets-hollow] Scientist dies at South Pole
Sydney: An Australian scientist has died at a South Pole research
station, and his body will have to remain there until November due
to harsh winter conditions, the U.S.-based National Science Foundation
(NSF) said on Monday.
I have read where it was becoming obvious to the women that their planned
journey was taking them way too long to be completed in the limited time
that was allowed for them. The time constraint is due to the severe South
pole winters that last 8(?) months every year. During these 8 months there
is almost total darkness IIRC.
Since they were running out of time before darkness was to set in that
would be one reason to go pick them up.
According to one of the stories I read (on CNN's site maybe), the women
had sails that they attached to their sleds so that on windy days they could
use the wind to help propel them across the continent. It sounded like they
were actually heavily depending on this wind to allow them to complete their
journey on time. They mentioned that for some reason, this year was unlike
many others in that there was comparatively no wind as was expected and observed
in most years. This slowed them down considerably.
That may be one reason for an early pickup anyway.
Cheers,
Jeff
