Scientist dies at South Pole
May 15, 2000 22:00 Hrs (IST)
Sydney: An Australian scientist has died at a South Pole research station, and his body will have to remain there until November due to harsh winter conditions, the U.S.-based National Science Foundation (NSF) said on Monday.

Astrophysicist Dr. Rodney Marks, 32, died at Amundsen-Scott South Pole station on Friday, apparently from natural causes, the NSF said in a press release.

The body of the scientist would have to remain there until November because harsh winter conditions mean aircraft probably cannot fly in any earlier, it said.

An autopsy to determine the exact cause of death will not be carried out until his body is recovered in November.

Marks, who was spending his second winter in Antarctica for the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, is the second member of the U.S. Antarctic program to die this year.

Johe G. Biesiada, 43, a Canadian electronics maintenance technician, on Jan. 8 died of unknown causes at Mcmurdo Station, the main U.S. scientific station in Antarctica.

Last October, U.S. Rescuers carried out a dramatic early-antarctic-summer flight to rescue the Amundsen-Scott station's only doctor, who had breast cancer.

About the scientist who died at the South Pole- it's just one thing after another down there. I wonder what's happening, maybe a conspiracy got broken up or something.
