I have the basic impression that this photo, which appeared in the Sun article, and which appeared in Jan's book, was a montage and that the " hole " was just caused by the region of the Arctic circle which lay in constant darkness during the Arctic night. This was Jan's explanation.
But the other pics, which I posted, are " it."
