MUSIC OF THE GODS? Exploring Native American Legends
by Jonsi Truthseeker
A life-long student of Native American myth and legend, Jonsi Truthseeker has
been researching tribal legends for many years, looking for clues to the
origin of humankind. In this article, he sheds new light on the popular
Kokopelli and the special birth of the white buffalo calf, Miracle, born in
1994 and considered a fulfillment of Native American prophecy.
Many Indian tribes have some sort of legend related to space travelers or
"ancient ones" which are believed to have originated from the sky or from
within the earth. These space travelers or underground dwellers are credited
by numerous Native American legends with being the originaters of the human
species or for assisting humans in learning a variety of skills from
agricultural to medicine.Concerning the inner earth dwellers, there are many
legends about the sacred paths these beings took to reach the light. The
underground portals from whence they came are what seekers today term as
"vortexes," places that have a special magnetic field which can actually be
physically felt. Some Native American legends go on to suggest that cultures
more ancient than their own retreated underground after something resembling
a major nuclear accident or the possible collision of earth with an astroid:
even the landing of a great space ship that upset Earth's balance, creating a
radioactive atmosphere which in turn killed the plant life thus causing the
Ice Age.In some tribes, there are legends about both origins. Some of the
Hopi claim to have come from one of these vortexes from within the earth
rather than from space while others claim they came from space to earth. In
some tribes, there are even legends concerning "Big Foot" and suggesting he
also came as a visitor from the sky.KOKOPELLI - Potent Creator? The true
legend of Kokopelli, the famous flute playing symbol of the Native Americans,
describes him as a sacred creature with supernatural powers who came from the
sky. The legend explains that Kokopelli traveled from village to village,
choosing a special virgin girl from each place he visited to have sexual
relations with her during the night. It was considered an honor to be chosen
by this wandering flute player. Before he arrived, the young virgins would
sense his coming which suggests a possible use of telepathic thought
transfer. The nubile girls would go through an elaborate ceremony involving
leaving water for Kokopelli in a special bowl along the path by which he
would arrive and sometimes a personal item would be left there as well,
something of value to this sacred traveler. From these offerings, he would
determine which virgin would share his bed and all children issuing from
these sacred unions displayed odd supernatural powers.Another legend suggests
the children created in the Kokopelli unions eventually built the great Olmec
civilization. They, too, are attributed supernatural powers and exhibited
building skills similar to those used to construct the Egyptian pyramids. No
one knows why the Olmec civilization vanished. One theory is that they
returned to space. Around the same time, the Anasazi (another great
civilization from about 1,000 years past to which the Hopi claim relation)
also vanished, leaving all their possessions behind. Kokopelli is often
depicted in modern jewelry and tourist items produced today, but one
important detail is usually omitted. Most people don't realize the omission
or significance but in petroglyphs, Kokopelli is usually pictured with a
huge, disproportionate penis that is about two thirds the length of his lower
body. The legend also talks about the hump on his back that most people
consider a deformity or a bag he was carrying. In this version of the legend,
it is some kind of equipment which allows him to breath in the earth's
atmosphere, further giving the impression he was not "from Earth." Some
speculate the "flute music" that heralded Kokopelli's arrival may have
actually been the ultrasonic hum of the breathing apparatus he carried on his
back, or a tube he used to breath through which produced a series of sounds
people found pleasing that was later represented by the instrument we now
know as the flute.
