Sir Patrick Moore is warning people not to be fooled into thinking Mars is a
UFO.
The red planet is on its closest approach to Earth for two years and will be
visible to the naked eye as a red dot low on the horizon.
Sir Patrick says whenever Mars is so close, police are inundated with
reports of flying saucers.
Mars will be at its closest point to Earth on June 13. People using even
small telescopes should be able to see its polar ice-caps.
Sir Patrick told the BBC: "It will be nice and bright, low down in the sky
after dark and it can look like a bright red star - and it normally sparks a
new crop of flying saucer reports."
Despite its unusually bright appearance, Mars will still be 42 million miles
away.
