The Man experienced hell- and heaven- on the ethereal platform, not physical
as we understand it.

Notice that the concept of a subterranean heaven was also introduced. That
is also a Vedic concept. The puranas even have a chapter which describe the
subterranean heavenly worlds.

And time dilation was introduced. The man experienced an " eternity " of
heaven as well as an " eternity " in hell, all in seconds.

In the flash all of life can be seen and felt, every part of it visited, whether beneath the earth, on the earth or in the heavens. Everything there ever was, or will be, is now. Many philosophies believe that time is a flash. Shamans also are exposed to both the underworld and the heavens on the ethereal platform. An example of one Shaman's initiation taken from two parts of the book Silent Thunder, show how this thought is universal among the enlightened.

Following the call of Jacob's voice the woman leaves her friends and family behind in search of the Land of the Children and enters deep into the forest, the dark world of her soul. She wanders aimlessly, relentlessly, seeking she knows not what. Soon she finds she has wandered so deep she can see neither light, nor path. She is surrounded by complete blackness. Because she is lost she kneels down upon the forest floor, and sinking in moss, prays for guidance. Nothing happens. No answers are given to her prayers, so she prays harder, with more sincerity. Still nothing. Oppressed with exhaustion she begins to cry. A single tear, then a hundred, then a thousand. Tears stream from her eyes spilling onto the forest floor. A pool forms beneath her body. She sinks deeper. She finds herself drifting into a kind of trance. Suddenly, from no specific place, neither from the ground beneath her, nor from any particular place above her, she receives the impression of a distinct, almost tangible Presence. Afraid her eyes are deceiving her she rubs away her tears, but the presence is still there. She is motionless. The Presence surrounds her and lifts her from the forest floor carrying her further into the dark woods. Reaching the edge of the forest, on the high cliffs above the sea, the Presence lays her on a fallen log and covers her with fir branches to keep her warm.

In a voice hoarse from tears the woman asks, "Who are you".

The Presence responds, "My name is Ishu, I came in answer to your prayers. Why do you cry child?"

"I'm lost, I'm looking for the Land of the Children."

"What are you looking to find in the Land of the Children?"

"A secret that I have forgotten. Something that makes me sad."

"Rest now child, you are sleepy. I will show you the way back to the Land of the Children in a dream. All you have to do is follow." And with that Ishu fades from the woman's view, vanishing into the mist, leaving her to fall into a deep sacred sleep.

From a distance Ishu watches over the woman while she descends into the invisible. He is a helper of souls and has watched over her for many lifetimes. He has waited for her cry, her call for help. He has waited a long time and could afford to wait forever; he is as old as dust. He only makes himself visible when souls are ready for him.

Ishu knows this woman is close to confronting her own darkness. Finding herself lost in the forest she will have to travel back to the beginning in order to find her way, back to the womb and even further still. It will be a journey where death precedes life, and before her birth she will be required to cross the threshold of Hell, fighting the evil beasts lurking inside her, slaying them one by one. She will have to plunge into the deep dark abyss where mystery will be her only guide. It will be the secret courtship of herself, following the call of her soul's longing for truth, where she will eventually find the light and be born whole, discovering what she already knows.

** pg 211--the second to last chapter in the book where Claire nears the end of her journey, one instant in Hell, the next in Heaven.**

The next evening, when the full moon sat on its throne high in a black mystical sky, Ishu appeared as he had promised: "My child, now that you have relived all the crucial periods of your life, your journey is almost complete. You still hold on to some fear, and the only way to release it will be for you to descend to the center of the underworld. A most treacherous trial will be held, but Hecate has taught you well on how to move about in the darkness of the night. You must pass this test in order to sever the grip that glues you in the shadow of sun. You will rise to your rightful place as a shaman. Others have descended before you. Some, like Old Crow, have returned possessing great powers. Some have failed and remained lost in the underworld forever. Let us move downward and see which it will be with you."

After traveling many hours Ishu summoned Claire to sit next to him by the river of fire. Flames shooting from the fire lit his face and these words tumbled from his lips:

"I see you in the flames and will tell you what I see. Uneasiness has always vibrated in your aura with the news of slaughtered women and children. Your tongue slipped--he should have killed me. Never able to sleep through the night--a barrage of nightmares. A walk in the jungle. The jaguar as your companion takes you to the edge of the forest but cannot accompany you over the line where purple flames of fire must be walked through alone. A sunlit path on the east side of the flames is a symbol of your transformation. You must set aside your masks, symbols of pure destruction. Renounce the security offered when you play familiar roles. A sword penetrates your spirit giving you insight. You see you wear the masks for protection and camouflage. But the masks separate you from both you and others. Cast these bonds of manipulation. Cut off the masks. Liberate your innocence.

"Fear of rejection, disapproval, and punishment represses your vitality. Life cannot be expressed through fear. Jump into the fire for emotional purification. Look deep into your own nature. Here is the key to Cerberus's gate. Travel the River Fire, flames will lead the way. Watch for your signal, the Star of Hope, she streams in a dark hole on the face of the moon. Have faith my child--this must be done by you alone."

Traveling over the River Fire the woman rocked in a boat between dark and darkness. Calls shouted in the wind. Cannibalism, to terrifying for

her eyes to look upon. An abnormal intensity of fear rose up in her. Flickering torches cast shadows over ceremonial rituals. Echoing, tormenting voices choked corpses.

Dead end in the dark a chill ran through her bones. Hecate gave her the power to flee from her fate. She must travel through the gate. Turn the key in the entranceway. She was in a region not for the living. Shrill cries-repulsive choirs-perverted souls dripping slime. Death darts pursued her, surrounding her spirit in the bottomless pit.

A meadow clearing, a burial ground. Background music held rhythmic time to agonizing groans accompanied by hallowed thunder. Kettledrums stirring the beat of decayed souls. Frenzied worshippers danced and shouted in exhalation round and round. Souls clad in garments, wolf skins, red eyes glowing, heads with horns. Fire blazes against spears raised in battle, monsters raving in utmost excitement, holy madness. A sacrificial feast. Men slicing open carcasses rush upon filthy animals, warm organs ripped off with their teeth devoured the raw bloody meat.

She fries in the heat, every pore of her body disconnects from reality, disintegrates her numbness, and she feels her total pain. Divine fire melts her ego. Flames break her bonds as lightning flashes in all directions from the bright Star of Hope trembling in the Heavens. Horns blows at midnight. Angel of Judgment frees her spirit in her moment of Surrender. Power bursts from the flames. She pierces the light of the invisible: spinning, wheels whirling, she's caught up in the perpetual motion of the universe.

A form enclosed in light beams pulls her from the infernal storm. Hands wrap her in leaves of protection, cradles her in mercy while

smoldering embers speared her heart aglow in fire, searing her soul with truth that lies beyond verbal expression transcending her earthly suffering.

In mystery and wonder clarity arose and the heavens opened. Soaring, she rode on the back of a light-winged angel, sweeping over spiritual

realms before unvisited. Angels sang in melodious voices, clear and ancient harmonies merged with her soul in harmonic union. Deep Feeling - Complete joy - Silent Ecstasy covered her in cosmic dust.

Embraced in beauty by the Sovereign Kingdom she floated on a crystal stairway, rising to a heavenly place unsurpassed by any grandeur. A bight angel before her, in a glorious robe, lifted, illuminated, and purified by a breath of divinity found in the wind. Wings of golden eagles warmed her soul.

Torrents of love sweep over her as Ishu whispers the divine secret:

"You have been emptied of everything and in your emptiness you found your way home. You entered the cave of your heart where God resides in love--absolute, holy and pure. In your heart dwells the perfect light of unity. Your heart knows the mystery of the philosopherÂ’s stone. Your heart is capable of making alchemical transmutations in gold. Beauty and splendor surround you in a world of miracle where you have been touched by the divine hand and filled with an infinity of love: pure, tender and true. You will now live one with the symphony of the whole."

Claire felt as though she had plunged into the depths of Hell, somehow escaped, or was rescued, and then carried to the farthest reaches of Heaven. She really didn't know what to think, or how to respond to what had just happened to

her. Ishu knew she was confused, and would be for awhile still, but she had made it through the dark night of her soul, and that was all he was needed for. His job was finished, there was no more buried memories for him to awaken, nothing else

he could do. From here on out it would just be Claire and Old Crow, and eventually even Old Crow would disappear.

Claire looked up into Ishu's face, she was pleading with her eyes for something more, answers to what the whole experience had meant. He could not give her the reasons for her journey, she would have to discover that for herself, but he did tell her she did not require his services any further: "It is time for me to leave you. My presence in your life is no linger needed, there are others I must go to now, others that need my help. The visions about yourself are completed, there is nothing more you need to know, you have emptied yourself of your anger and hurt, and that is all that matters.

"It will take a little time for you to understand the whole experience, but each day the journey you made will become clearer, the reasons for it will be known. From here on out you will continue to learn, visions will always be a part of your life---one of the tools you will use in your work, but the visions will not longer be dangerous for you---they will be a healing tool, where the spirit will show you what is needed for those you heal. You will remain with Old Crow until your fortieth birthday. At that time you will awaken from the dream world."

"What will happen then, when I'm forty."

"Your time in the dessert will be finished. You will be ready to re-enter the physical world and use the gifts you have been given to help others."

"Will I ever see you again?"

"No child, you will never see me again, but there will be other Spirit's who will enter your life from time to time. They will come when they are needed."

Before Ishu disappeared from Claire's life he stood before her, his coal black eyes burning with compassion, and transferred all the love he had into her soul, filling the emptiness inside her with the warmth of his spirit.

She will never forget his magnetic eyes boring into her, eyes that were full of an irresistible flow of power, and with his look he melted away her last remaining doubts and tears when he said, "Everything that ever was, or will be, is contained in this moment, time is a flash of light across the sky, it is an illusion, and when the illusion is penetrated, truth reigns. If you remember this, you will always know the truth."
