For years, I have had an explanation up about a drawing from the Raymond Bernard book, The Hollow Earth. It depicts the magnetic pole as being linear. I have just redone the explanation because it wasn't so good. It is a super-short read:

In other words, this is why it is not possible to depict the situation in the Arctic basin, around the opening, on a flat map.
