For a clearer view of the area Dean is showing us with
those dark satellite pictures, check out the website atThe same triangular area of open ocean appears on these
images from the Earth View website. It seems to be centered
on about 77 deg N Lat and 141 E Long. It is farther south
than my estimated location for the north polar opening. But
it is curious that open ocean in the ice could exist there
if there was no polar opening nearby. Maybe the peak at
the north of the triangular area is where the open ocean is
coming from. Nansen steamed north in his ship the Fram in
this open ocean to about the north peak of the triangle which
is located about 79 deg N Lat, only back then the open ocean
extended clear down to the New Siberian Islands.If you have trouble accessing the Earth View website, here
