Lots of people who have virus programs don't realize that those programs
*must* be updated. Once a week updates are ok but every other day or so is
better. Most programs, such as Norton and McCaffee, have their own websites
online that they must access for updates.

I work doing tech support and can't count the number of times that people who
have virus programs still find their computers stopped dead by a virus. It's
because they didn't know to update, or to update very regularly.

Not to drive the subject into the ground (no pun intended on this hollow
earth list!), but some research companies estimate that the average web
surfer is exposed to a virus every three minutes.
