Dennis,
Mr. Cater told me about a fellow named Jim Bowen who supposedly went into
the Southern opening with Byrd. The fellow had heard that Cater was a HE
exponent and made contact with Mr. Cater. They became friends and even went
on a trip of some kindtogether, to the Rockies maybe it was.
Bowen said that, as he ws being mustered out of the Navy, he was pulled
aside, basically, and asked to volunteer for a mission, that he was being
given the opportunity because of his service record and recommendations.
He said that this took place after High Jump, at some time in 1948. He said
that a group of 100 accompanied the Admiral down from Melbourne or
thereabouts in a cutter and a couple of other ships, and that they were
briefed and told about the opening and that they were going in. They went
into it knowing. They marched at one point for about three months, then the
nature of the area changed. They ran into constant illumination and hazy
skies. He said that he couldn't see far because of the constant fog and
that, in spite of the constant illumination, that he never saw the inner sun
oranything due to the fog. He reported lush vegetation, that the ice
disappeared. One term that Cater used when he related this was " permenent
overcast."
You may think that this is oversimplistic, I may even lose a few of you for
relating this, but Jim reported that they saw a dino in the distance,
something like a T. Rex, and that they crouched down low and got out of that
area pronto.
50 people went back after three months of penetration, and he was among
them. The other 50 continued another three months.
How does this fit in with where your research dictates Byrd should have
been? This is what I would like to know. Mr. Cater is available for
comments.
I mean, at some point they had to have done somethinglike this, and they
have probably gotten close and nosed around several times.
