By May of 1884, They Already Knew ...

This is in the Olaf Jansen book, Smokey God, Part I:

Again, the Norwood Review of England, in its issue of May 10, 1884,
"We do not admit that there is ice up to the Pole - once inside the
ice barrier, a new world breaks upon the explorer, the climat is mild
that of England, and, afterward, balmy as the Greek Isles."

Smokey God: The Smokey God

We know from Marshall Gardner's book that Dutch whalers and others
had made it way up near the Pole and that they had found open seas,
clear of ice, and warm temperatures at times. Could it be that some
had gone in and came back with this kind of testimony, from within
the orifice?
