This reminds me of an experience I had at my workplace a week ago.
A co-worker of mine was "holding court," telling a small group of us about
his time in the military. He mentioned that he was stationed in Greenland for
a short time. I remained quiet until he mentioned that "I even flew over the
North Pole once!"
Then I mentioned that that was highly unlikely. Then I briefly expained the
HE theory, and he didn't look at me like I was nuts. He admitted to me that
they were actually 200-miles off from the exact North Pole, because it wasn't
in their flight plan. I told him that if they did decide to take it upon
themselves to fly over the NP that one way or another their careers would
have been ended.
This guy was in Greenland? The air base is near to the place where Peary and
all the othe explorers camped out. Ask him about the warming and the froen
storms, the warm air storms in the winter.
Actually, they go to the Pole. The pole seems to be just inside the rim, but
the slope is not pronounced enough for " straight up to be straight across,"
the Pole is a couple of hundred miles yet from the neck of the opening. The
traick is to see if anyone ever got way over on the other side of the Pole,
tending towards Siberia.
