What happens if you were to fall asleep on your porch? Do people do such a
thing in your neck of the woods? It sounds like you have to be on guard
living where you do.

Most people keep dogs.
I wouldn't rely on them though.
They are nose oriented so pretty useless upwind. Bear can move real quietly
too.
I am high enough in the mountains that sleeping indoors is usually a good
thing.
I used to think the 2nd storey deck was safe until opening the door and
meeting a bear.
Besides, the bottom level is a daylight basement with poured 8 inch
concrete/steel walls so it is cooler than outside during heat waves in
July/August.
