Arno Peters and Mercator have nothing on Buckminster Fuller. You may or may not be familiar with him. If not try this map for starters:

Hi, Dean and all.
Sorry I've not been able to join in the fun since joining the group, but my PC has been a tad "under the weather", and my printer just died! Not an auspicious beginning I'm afraid!
However, I've been following the general drift of the various debates, including the map one. I really fail to see what's so great about that Arno Peters world map projection, in comparison with our current Mercator's projection! As far as I can tell, the Arno Peters map was really only devised to give various (but not all) countries and landmasses some sort of respectable comparison in relative visual surface- area, so that no nation would feel overly belittled, as rather unfortunately does occur, here and there, on the Mercator's projection.
But the Mercator's version does seem to relate much more closely to satellite photos of Earth, so I'm happy enough with it as it is. (Even though Australia loses out to the USA in apparent size!) The big thing, in my view, is that neither map is really of any use for our purposes since both polar regions are distorted and stretched out of all recognition on both projections. (Unless somebody's found another Arno Peter's world map than the one that I've checked out!)
Belated Happy birthday, to you, Tuscan - even though I don't know you yet! I guess us old fellers got to stick together, eh! ("Even if I am 13 years ahead of you!" - said he, spitting tobacco-juice accurately onto the store stove lid!)
As Arnie S. says "Ah'll be back!" Just got to get this *!*!*!*PC and printer fixed!
Greetings and Regards to all.
Gerry
