Weather puts off Antarctic rescue:

Rescuers will try again today to retrieve an ailing U.S. doctor from the
South Pole, after bad weather forced a planned evacuation flight yesterday.
The decision was made in the face of strong winds and low visibility,
said Alerie Carroll, a spokeswoman for Raytheon Polar Services, the civilian
company that provides staff and support services for U.S. Antarctic programs.
Two eight-seater propeller rescue planes remain at Rothera base on
Adelaide Island in Antarctica, where they landed the day before after a
six-hour flight from Punta Arenas, Chile's southernmost city.
Dr. Ronald Shemenski, 59, is the only physician among 50 scientists
working at the Amundsen Scott-South Pole station in Antarctica. He recently
suffered a gallbladder attack and has been diagnosed with the potentially
life-threatening condition pancreatitis.
One of the planes was set to take off for the daring 10-hour flight to
the pole yesterday, after its landing gear was changed to skis that can land
on ice.
That flight has been rescheduled for this morning Post Wire Service
(04/23/01)

Is the problem flying, or landing? I'd like to think that I could fly over
the Antartic at anytime and just go straight in.

You might think of other possible meanings for go straight in.
Weather can stop your journey in more ways than one.

Whiteout has caused more than one crash down there.

Dean: I have a couple articles on the Antarctica rescue. It seems that
there are four or five more people that have to leave because of illness.

Hi Dean,

I must be missing something. I see you sent an attachment for Ch. 40, yet when I copied it from your web the story ended before the ending of Ch. 38 with this sentence?
