Actually in the most basic of terms this phenomena appears to
be a contradiction to the Keplerian laws of planetary motion. I forget
which one but I responded to this idea and defended how the spiral galactic
arms and the way they orbit is neither a violation to Newtons gravity
nor the three laws of planetary motion set forth by Kepler. If you read
everything I have written lately, you should find this idea addressed.

Another astronomer wrote a paper in the 1960's where he pointed out that gravity might actually not be valid at galactic distances. For example it has been found that the outer sections of the long arms of spiral galaxies actually move faster than the inner sections. This means that spiral galaxies violate Newtonian gravity.
