Here is something which I ran across in Marshall Gardne's book, Journey to
the Earth's Interior. It is about Nansen as he was descending from the Pole
towards Franz Joseph Land. Towards, not at: He was close to 84*, which is
way up there. You would expect it to be cold so close to the Pole during the
beginning of May, but he couldn't sleep for the heat!Gardner sums it up: " On May 4th, the explorer is again found commenting on
the mild weathe. One night he says he could hardly sleep for the heat. In
the day time he can lie in the tent basking in the heat of the sun. ' Last
night,' runs anothe entry, it was almost too warm to sleep.' "Dharma/Dean
