I can believe that. I was reading in the Dec 2000
"National Geographic" that carbon dating is only
fairly accurate up to 40,000? years back.

Older objects than that you are basically guessing
with current carbon dating technology.

The coal came from deep down, that's for sure, but you are right- how can we trust estimates of age of different crusts?

Soft particles, interacting with matter within the Earth on the level of the fundamental particles, would also screw up results from carbon dating.
