Thor dwelt in Asgard;
Asgard was located "within" the world-tree Yggdrasil; according to Norse
tradition, Yggdrasil was rooted in the north, root-worlds sunk deep into >
the earth, with the pole star (rich with shamanistic meaning) at the > top.
In the Vedic context Mount Meru (or Sumeru) is analogous of Yggdrasil and
its top, with abodes of devas (gods) including the creator god (demiurge)
Brahma, takes place of Asgard.
The shaman would journey, in spirit or in body, up and down the
world-tree and into "other worlds," which were actually subterranean in
nature.
There are Vedic accounts of mystics travelling up and down the universe thru
the heavenly river Ganga (akash Ganga) which divides at the top of Mt. Meru
into four branches (mentioned by me before).
the southernmost region (from which the
fire-giant Surt would come, literally "out of the underworld"
In the Vedic accounts the final annihilation of the universe happens due to
the fire created by the cosmic serpent Sankarshana, or Ananta Shesha, (from
his mouth) at the bottom of the universe.
