Norse fishermen and explorers. These areas were charted and avoided to keep
from being sucked into them. They are a puzzlement, but are attributed to
currents and deep underwater fjords. But, that's about all I know of them.

I have a Canadian friend who was in a small fishing boat many years ago in one of the great lakes I think, and he and his friend came upon a large dark area of water with strange properties. When they entered this dark area their boat sank dangerously way down into the water and their engine sagged terribly. It really frightened them and then they realized they were in a giant whirlpool and that terrified them. After much struggle they finally managed to escape the currents of the whirlpool while praying that their engine didn't die. I asked what would have happened had they been drawn into the center of the whirlpool cause I was thinking it couldn't be very violent, and he said they could see the center far away and didn't want to even consider it!
